MS45 engine won't start after flash

Post by Renovelo »

The progress bar finally reaches 100% in ByteTuner, the flash finishes, you go to crank the engine, and then nothing...now what?! Below are some tips which should help get your engine running again.

Was the flash successful?
First, make sure the flash did actually finish. If the flash was cancelled or it fails before finishing, your DME will be stuck in diagnostic mode (temperature gauge at its maximum position). If this happens, try flashing again until the flash is successful. The engine will not start if the flash does not finish or if the DME is stuck in diagnostic mode.

Read/clear the DTCs
Next, read the DTCs. You might discover the issue which is preventing the engine from starting. For example, you might see DTC "0x2796: Electronic throttle controller - adaptation wrong". This means you need to reset your throttle adaptation which can easily be done in ByteTuner. This exact problem happens more often than you might think. After reading the DTCs and addressing anything that appears, try clearing them.

Manually resetting throttle adaptation
You can also manually reset the throttle adaptation using the following procedure:
  1. Make sure ignition is turned off
  2. Press the throttle pedal down all the way to the floor (again while ignition is still off)
  3. Turn ignition to 3rd position (position before cranking; don't crank the engine!) for 30 seconds while holding throttle down the entire time
  4. Turn ignition off and remove key while still holding throttle down
  5. After the key is removed from the ignition, release the throttle and wait 30 seconds
  6. Try starting the car again
Modified tune?
If you've modified the tune and the engine isn't starting, revert your changes back to the state when the engine was able to start. Gradually apply your changes again (maybe even smaller changes) until you can pinpoint the reason the engine won't start and figure out how to fix it.

Still not starting?
If you've tried all of the steps above, contact us. The first thing we'll ask you to provide us are the debug log files which were generated in the background. You can find these by clicking the "Logs" button under the Help menu in ByteTuner. Please send us all of these when you contact us. Also, tell us everything you've tried to resolve the issue.
