Datalog values don't seem right

Post by rkneeshaw »

Hi,

I did my first datalog but I'm having some trouble making sense of some of the values. For example, the voltage values don't seem right. Mass Air Flow Voltage ranges from 1.13274 to 961.0918, for example. Thottle Setpoint (Deg) is giving me values like 61655.81, 57832.19, 74084.43. Lambda Integrator (%) provides values of 404.6875, 17008.59, etc. Ignition advance is 8212.5, 16401, 24598.5, 21, etc.

Other values are fine and make perfect sense, such as RTPM, Vehicle speed, coolant temp, etc.

I was going to consult the help file in the application but I'm getting an error when I click on it. Anyone have a copy of the help file, or can offer advise as to why I'm receiving these strange values?

Re: Help Documents

Post by Renovelo »

Hey Ryan,

First of all, welcome to the forums!

We ended up moving this thread from Getting Started to help us track it better since these problems are definitely bugs.

The help file should be included in two locations: the *.zip file you downloaded with the installer and also in the program directory where ByteLogger is installed. Clicking the "Help" button in ByteLogger should open the copy in the program directory. Are you getting an error in ByteLogger when clicking "Help" or are you unable to open the PDF?

Regarding the incorrect values you're seeing, this is definitely a bug which the help file won't solve! Do you mind posting your datalog below for us to analyze?

There could be many different reasons for these incorrect values. ByteLogger is using the BMW diagnostic protocol for datalogging. We've seen a few instances where the BMW protocol has minor errors for other DMEs, but not this many! Therefore this could be due to an error on our part or due to an error in the BMW protocol. The reason for the incorrect numbers could be that we're grabbing the wrong memory address for some of these various values, or we're incorrectly converting from the raw values to real units.

Thanks for alerting us of this issue! We will begin to look into it and report back shortly.

Re: Help Documents

Hi, I found the help file in the zip file, so I'm all set there. Also, the error I was getting was a fatal error but it was because I did not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, so it didn't know what application to use to open the help file. 99.9% of all people have Adobe Reader installed so I would be surprised if anyone else ever gets this error message :)

I'm trying to attach my datalog but the forums are telling me "the extention csv is not allowed". I tried renaming my datalog to txt, and it isn't allowing txt files either.

I'll just dump a sample into a code block for now:

Code: Select all

Re: Help Documents

Sorry about the CSV and TXT limitation on attachments! We've fixed that and have attached the log below.

Regarding the fatal error in ByteLogger, we will correct this as well in the next release. Even though most people do have Adobe installed on their computers, fatal errors (ones that aren't gracefully captured) are definitely not acceptable.

After reviewing the datalog, I think we've figured out what the problem was. After we confirm everything, we will report back soon!

Okay, so we figured out the problem. We can only blame ourselves for this error! We will fix it in the next release of ByteLogger. Just so everybody is aware, this bug will only affect MS45.1 datalogs. All other supported DMEs are not affected by this bug. Once we correct this bug, we will send you a beta version to test again before we finalize the new release. Attached below is the new *.csv datalog.

Although, most of these values appear correct compared to the previous datalog, we're still questioning a few such as the manifold pressure. Looking at ESS's website, the twinscrew kit should put out 7psi of boost. According to the corrected datalog, the manifold pressure peaks at 125kPa which translates to 18.2psi. The ambient pressure for this datalog was ~985hPa which translates to 14.3psi meaning the measured boost pressure was ~4psi. Are you running a lower pressure than stock for some reason?

Regardless, all the other values seem relatively close to what they should be. For example, now we can see the MAF transfer function by plotting MAF voltage vs. flow.

FYI: as you can see, your datalog is averaging ~3Hz. The datalogging protocol for the MS45.1 DME is unique in the sense that the number of parameters you request directly affects the sampling rate. Therefore, if you want an increased sampling rate, log only the parameters you're interested in seeing.

Great info!

My ESS kit is the 8psi version even, so this is very interesting. Any idea where the MS45.1 gets its manifold pressure values from? There aren't any electronic components within the new ESS manifold itself, these are all PCV, vaccum, or intercooler ports:

The MAF installs directly in front of the throttle body, with a couple vacuum connections in between (for ICV, fuel pressure regulator, etc).

I don't recall any sensors built into the intake side of the head either. Could it be sampling the "manifold pressure" from the MAF, and therefore be somewhat inaccurate because its based on the vacuum side?

I'm interested to see how the O2 voltages and the short term and long term fuel trims look. The MS45.1 supposedly runs wideband O2 sensors, so I'm wondering if the data gathered will give me a sense for my AFR. Additionally I'm interested to see if my timing advance is bouncing all over the place, or if it is staying steady around 20 degrees or so. What started my interest in datalogging is to find out if this feeling of uneven power delivery and occasionaly timing pull is real or if its all in my head.... :)

I am scheduled for my "after TS2 install" dyno run in three weeks, so I want to make sure I'm running at peak efficiency before then and I'll have an accurate before-after power gain to report for the ESS TS2 kit :geek:

Wow...that's an impressive looking kit! No, we're not as familiar with the MS45.1 as we are with earlier E46 DMEs. If this car had a MAP sensor, it would be somewhere in the intake manifold. Seeing as how the ESS kit completely replaces this, I'm sure you would have noticed the MAP sensor if it had one. Therefore, I'm thinking it may be an estimated value instead. I think the MAF sensor has extra wires compared to the earlier E46 sensors which allows IAT measurement. Perhaps they're using the ideal gas law to predict manifold pressure?

We did some more digging in the MS45.1 DME, and found the stock MAF transfer function. Apparently, ESS has not modified the original curve as can be seen below. However, it does appear they're using the entire range of the sensor. Typically, the MAF sensor does not reach close to 5.0v when the engine is near redline in a naturally aspirated car. Even if they're not using a resistor in the wiring harness to scale the MAF output, it might be feasible to still use the stock MAF and transfer function since it's located before the supercharger.

Thanks, yes, they did a great job on the hardware. I've been very impressed. It looks too sexy to cover up with the plastic bits in the engine bay :)

I think you're right on about the MAP sensor, or lack of one. I didn't have to move any sensors over so I'm pretty certain there never was a MAP sensor in this car. And, yes, the MAF on this car has more wires than the MS43 cars, it has the IAT built-in. There was no splicing of the wiring harnesses when I installed this kit either, no resisters or anything. In fact, I made no permanent modifications when I installed the kit, another thing I liked about it. The manifold pressure values must be calculated rather than measured.

Hi,

I have similar problem with MS43 the data numbers are not correct and read like: 45000, 68000.
I have Windows 10 Pro, maybe this is the problem ? because my friend uses Windows 7 and reads on my car fine.

Can you create a new thread since your issue is isolated to MS43 instead of MS45? Also, please attach two items to your post: the data log in question and the *.log file which was generated in the background. You can find these log files by clicking “Logs” under the Help menu. This is assuming you’re talking about ByteTuner and not ByteLogger (logs aren’t currently available in ByteLogger).
